Assessments are typically recommended for individuals with any medical conditions that may affect their driving. (e.g., Stroke, Dementia, Parkinson’s, Diabetes, Cardiovascular disorders etc.), older drivers, or anyone referred by a GP, consultant, occupational therapist. Family members often request an On-Road Assessment when concern about loved ones.

Health Care Professionals can refer using our secure, encrypted HCP Referral form or by emailing us directly from Health mail (we are a registered white site with Health mail and can receive and send emails this way). Family members and individuals do not need to refer but can book directly through the BOOK AN ASSESSMENT Tab.

You can use the “BOOK AN ASSESSMENT” Tab to complete a booking. You can also contact us directly via email or phone, our team are happy to answer any questions about any part of the process.

The assessment involves a drive on familiar routes regularly used by the client. The aim is to help clients to feel as confident as possible throughout the assessment. On the day, an assessor will visit the client’s home, and the assessment will take place in the client’s own car. The assessment typically lasts just under an hour. During this time, the assessor will observe and take notes, these notes/reports are then sent to our office where a more detailed, final report is prepared. The final report will be sent to the client and any relevant HCP’s.

Assessments can take approximately one hour.

Assessments are typically conducted on routes the client is most likely to use on a regular basis, with one of our fully qualified assessors arriving to the client’s residence on the scheduled appointment date. The assessment is usually conducted in the individual’s own car; however, if this is not possible, we can often provide the assessor’s car instead.

Yes, you must hold a valid licence to take part in the on-road assessment. Please note that the assessor will need to see the physical licence on the day of the assessment. If your license has expired or is due to expire, please contact us asap. We can help with an RSA contact who will help you apply for a Temporary Learner’s Permit on Medical grounds. This temporary learner's permit is short dated and is only intended to allow you to complete the assessment.

You will need a valid driving licence or learner permit with you. It is also important to ensure your car is roadworthy, taxed, insured, and has a valid NCT (if applicable). A full cancellation fee of €195 will apply if our assessor arrives to find the assessment cannot go ahead because of the previous not being in order. If you wear glasses or hearing aids while driving, please wear them during the assessment.

We recommend clients undertake the assessment alone, a third person in the vehicle may add to feelings of anxiety or nervousness. However, if you are more comfortable with the support of a family member or friend you can choose to have them accompany you for the assessment.

Many of our clients referred for a driving assessment have not driven in some time due to illness, injury, or medical treatment. Our assessors are understanding and experienced in supporting individuals in this situation. We recommend doing a short practice drive (with a qualified driver, if needed) before the assessment.

A report will be completed and sent to both you and the individual’s doctor within five working days after the assessment. The On-Road Assessment forms one part of the overall process of determining a person’s fitness to drive.

The final decision about returning to driving rests with the individual’s HCP. Our On-Road Driving Assessment provides valuable insight into your driving ability and is one vital part of the overall picture. Your GP or consultant will also consider other factors, such as your medical history and the results of any Off-Road Assessments including, cognitive evaluations. We strongly recommend that you discuss your assessment report with your doctor before making any decisions about returning to driving. This ensures the decision is made in your best interest, with all the relevant medical information considered.

Please let us know as soon as possible if you wish to cancel or reschedule your assessment. A cancellation fee will apply if the assessment is cancelled within 48 hours of the assessment date. An administration fee may be applied to assessments cancelled outside 48hrs.

Our assessors are trained professionals with backgrounds in driving instruction. They have specific experience in assessing drivers with medical conditions and are committed to conducting fair, supportive, and respectful assessments.

DAI does not report directly to the NDLS. The final decision about your license rests with your referring Healthcare Professional and the NDLS. Our role is to provide an objective, professional assessment. Our goal is always to support safe driving where possible.

No — it is not a pass or fail test. It is a professional assessment that evaluates your current driving ability. The outcome is a detailed report with recommendations. However, we do make a clear recommendation of "Fit to Drive" or "Not Fit to Drive".

Please bring your valid driving licence, your Eircode, and confirmation of your current motor insurance, NCT, and motor tax. These details will also be required during the booking process.

Your own car is used during the assessment. Please ensure it is taxed, insured, and has a valid NCT.
